Piran

Piran is a port town on the Slovenian coast and the center of the Municipality of Piran. It lies on the very tip of the Piran peninsula and in the immediate vicinity of Portoroz. With its sub-Mediterranean climate is one of the warmest areas of Slovenia. There are many sunny days, rainfall is low and there are mild winters and hot summers, temperatures in winter rarely fall below zero.

The settlement began to develop in the early Middle Ages, in the first decade of the 7th Piran century, first mentioned in sources as Piranon. In 2nd half of the 8th century Piran, together with Istria, came under Frankish, from under Byzantine rule. Old Town population was Roman and under the influence of Venice in the new Ages, Venice dominated the speech.

Piran is today strongly linked to salt-pans and Municipality of Piran with its salt-pans ranks the Republic of Slovenia in the circle of the Mediterranean countries in which it still retains the traditional and natural way of processing salt. Clean sea water, help of sunshine, wind and effort salt-paners the salt is produced, on which the municipality Piran is proud every year.
